Tips to Avoid Back Pain While Traveling

It is really exciting to travel to exotic destinations with your dear ones during the summers. However, at times, traveling long distances can be a real pain. For instance, the seats in an airplane are primarily designed to provide safety to the passengers rather than offering them great comfort. There are several airplane seats that do not provide support for your lumbar and eventually your back is in a "C" position, which can be quite uncomfortable during the long flight. Moreover, some airlines do not provide sufficient legroom for most travelers, especially got those who heights are more than 6 feet tall. Here are some safety tips to ensure that your back is comfortable and does not make you suffer while you are traveling to your holiday destination.

Lift your luggage cautiously

You may experience a back pain or strain your back while trying to lift a heavy bag. It is precisely for this reason that many experts recommend to move slowly when you lift a bulky luggage. They suggest that you should lift luggage in smaller parts of possible. For instance, if you are trying to lift your back into an overhead space, you can first lift it to the top of your seat. Now in a separate movement, move it to the overhead bin. In the same manner, putting a suitcase in your car's trunk can be completed in small steps. You can first lift it to a chair and then put it into the car's trunk.

Some other tips for lifting your luggage are as follows:

  • Use your leg muscles and bend at your case knees instead of using the back muscles to lift luggage.
  • Be careful not to twist your lower back when you are lifting. Rather, try to pivot with your feet.

  • Try to get an aisle seat. This way you can get more space when you want to stretch out a lot. Moreover, it will be easier for you to get out and get in.
  • Make sure you travel light, particularly when you have to carry your own luggage while traveling. In case it is possible, carry a bag with wheels.
  • Drink water in plenty while traveling. Changes in the altitude may make you dehydrated. Avoid intake of alcohol, coffee, and tea since these beverages can dehydrate you even more.
  • Carry some relaxing and soothing music with you. This way you can relax more and your stress and tension will come down that can otherwise aggravate the pain.
  • Your blood flow should be good.
  • Try to move inside the cabin. Moreover, stretch yourself after every one hour.
  • Some calf squeezes can come handy.
  • Your ankles should be moved in a circular motion.
  • Precautions during long car trips

  • Try taking breaks frequently in between the trip. You need to stretch too and move a bit from time to time.
  • Take out your wallet and mobile phone from the back pocket. When these gems are inside your back pocket, your sitting position can become abnormal and can increase your discomfort.
  • Use the lumbar support of your car. In case the support in your car is not adequate, try using a small towel or rolling up a cloth or a shirt.
  • Maintain proper posture while traveling.
  • Switch the role of a driver as much as possible.
