Symptoms, Causes and Treatment of Runner's Knees

Runner’s knee can be a real painful condition for people who are affected by the ailment. But what is it actually? Its medical term is Patellofemoral pain syndrome and is the most widely found running conditions among the known ones. When a person suffers from a runner’s knee, he or she experiences a dull pain near the top or behind the kneecap.

CAUSES OF RUNNER'S KNEES

A person can suffer from a runner’s knee due to several possible reasons.

  • Knee injury - When your knee is directly hit due to a big blow or after falling down, it could lead to a runner’s knee.
  • Overstraining the knee joint - When you tend to repeat high-stress or bending exercises, thereby causing tremendous irritation to your knee joints.
  • Malalignment of bones - When a bone or bones from the ankles to the hips are not in their proper position placing excessive pressure on certain portions of your joint, you can suffer from this condition. This restricts the smooth movement of your kneecap, resulting in pain.
  • Hypermobile feet or other feel-related problem -This is a scenario when the movement of your joints around your feet is greater than what should be considered as normal. Such excessive movement may affect the way a person walks, thus leading to knee pain.
  • Thigh muscles getting unbalanced or weak - Your kneecap is placed in proper place by muscle known as quadriceps in the knee, whenever you stretch or even bend your joint. If these muscles become too tight or get weakened, your kneecap could shift from its right position.
  • RUNNER'S KNEES SYMPTOMS

  • Grinding sensation within knee
  • Some movements that may cause a grinding or crunching sensation in the knee could be a symptom of Runner’s knee. This symptom is also called knee crepitus. The affected person might feel this sensation after taking rest for a prolonged time period such as after waking up in the morning.

  • Deterioration of pain while in motion
  • If a person is suffering from runner’s knee, he or she may feel popping sounds, additional friction and great pain whenever they try to move up or down the steps or hills. Pain in the knee’s front portion- When the muscles become misaligned, there could be on a kneecap’s sides or in the front of a person’s knee. The person could experience a pain, while resting. He or she may also experience a sharp pain while the knee is being used.

  • Swelling of the knee
  • This is not only a symptom for runner’s knee could be for other ailments too. The person who is affected from runner’s knee may get a swelling right in front of his knees, indicating inflammation. The swelling could in turn lead to greater soreness or limited mobility in several cases.

    RUNNER'S KNEES TREATMENT

Some of the treatment options for a runner’s knee are mentioned below:

  • Take rest dynamically - When you give your efforts towards the rehabilitation of injuries, you need to be fit by indulging in upper-body exercises such as biking or pool running without causing pain to your knees.
  • Make your hips and knees strong - When your quads lack flexibility or are weak, they could cause knee pain. When you try to make these areas more flexible, your pain could be eased out so that you can get back to the usual training sessions. However, if your pain continues even after indulging in home-based trainings for two months, it is better to consult a doctor.
