At Phoenix Family Medical Clinic, we make it easy to spring clean your health and wellness routine. We have put together some of our favorite tips to get your body and mind refreshed and revitalized for the spring season so you can enjoy more of what springtime has to offer – and less of the doctor’s office.
Dirt is Your Friend
Springtime in the valley is a great time to get outside and get dirty! Exposing ourselves to the bacteria in dirt is actually good for your immune system. Studies show that children who lived on farms and spent time around dirt were less likely than city dwelling children to develop allergies. We believe that when the healthy bacteria contained in dirt regularly comes in contact with our bodies, it creates vitamins that aid our digestive and immune systems.
Garden
Get that physical activity in with gardening. Planting herbs, mowing the lawn and landscape maintenance can give you a good low impact workout. Take advantage of the moderate weather in Phoenix before the temperature heats up in May.
Eat Locally, Eat Seasonally
Here in the Valley, we have a lot of great farmer’s markets that provide an opportunity to support local businesses and agriculture. Due to Arizona’s unique climate, we have many varieties of produce that grow year-round so there is always something delicious to prepare. This may also be a good time to consider joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), which is a convenient and low-cost way to get fresh fruits and veggies as well as other edible items.
Forget the Flip Flops
We know this can be a tough one. Flip flops may be easy to put on, but they are not great for the health of your feet. In fact, the minimalistic structure of flip flops can make you more prone to injury. Podiatrists recommend footwear that provides adequate stability and arch support.
Allergies
Allergy season is in full swing and the Phoenix Family Medical Clinic is a great place to get the right treatment. We offer a full range of allergy tests to determine what to avoid and how to deal with allergens. You may need a prescription nasal steroid or medicine to help. One of our doctors will meet with you to discuss your symptoms and recommend the right medication for you. Changing your pillows and deep cleaning your home can also help keep indoor allergies and asthma at bay. Don’t forget we offer same-day doctor appointments!
