You try and do your best as a parent to keep your child happy and healthy, but it is also important to start teaching them healthy habits that will carry into adulthood. Learn how to get your kids to take the initiative to stay physically and mentally well as 2019 draws near. Read on for our helpful suggestions on how to teach your children the importance of being healthy. Introduce a Balanced and Varied Diet Children can be notoriously picky eaters. Their palettes are not fully developed, which could be why they tend to like very sweet foods. It can be a challenge for any parent to get their child to eat a healthy diet. However, at Phoenix Family Medical Clinic we believe that eating a balanced and varied diet is the cornerstone of good health. We have some suggestions that will hopefully get some colorful produce, lean proteins and whole grains onto your child’s plate. Getting kids involved in cooking helps them to take ownership over their meals. Without structure, dinnertime can become a battleground in many homes. However, if kids have some input on the menu for week and are allowed to help with age-appropriate cooking tasks, then they will be more willing to want to eat their own creations. Try limiting screen time before bed and have children read or talk about the good parts of their day. It also helps to keep their rooms cool, relatively dark and quiet. Phoenix Family Medical Clinic provides Pain Management services through its affiliate clinic, Pain Centers of Phoenix. The Pain Centers accept most private, Medicare and AHCCCS insurance plans. Appointments are required to be seen at the clinic, walk ins are not accepted at the Pain Centers.

The transfer of medical charts and documentation is seamless between Phoenix Family Medical Clinic and the Pain Centers. You need health insurance, we can help. Phoenix Family Medical Clinic is a Health-e-Arizona Subscriber and serves as a Contracted Community Partner Organization.

Our way of giving back to the community and of helping people gain access to health insurance is that Phoenix Family Medical clinic now offers services to help apply for and guides through the entire process of gaining AHCCCS and insurance through marketplace. We offer this service at no cost at our Phoenix location. Please call to schedule an appointment for this service.

The expansion of AHCCCS in Arizona offers many low-income individuals and families new opportunities to be healthy and well. And the new Health Insurance Marketplaces which open October 1 provide help for the vast majority of middle-income families by making it easier to find insurance and providing financial help to pay for it.

The good news is that most families who apply will qualify for financial help.

There are 3 ways you may save on health care coverage:

1. You may be able to lower the cost of your monthly premium when you enroll in a private health insurance plan through The Marketplace.
2. You may qualify for lower out-of-pocket costs for copayments, coinsurance and deductibles through The Marketplace.
3. You may qualify for Medicaid, or AHCCCS in Arizona.

Most people who apply will qualify for lower costs of some kind. In fact, if you as an individual make less than $45,960 or your family of four makes under $94,200, you could get a real break on insurance.

AHCCCS has been expanded to cover childless adults and now will be available to individuals making under $20,000 and for families of eight making up to $95,500.

If you would like to explore if you are eligible for AHCCCS or need help filling out the on-line application for The Marketplace, our trained specialists are here to help at absolutely no charge. We'll walk you through the application process and then help you understand the ins and outs of the programs you may be eligible for.

When you work with one of our trained specialists to apply in The Marketplace, we ask that you spend some time in advance thinking about your budget and insurance coverage needs. You'll find a full list here.

At Phoenix Family Medical Clinic we incorporate therapies typically excluded by conventional medicine in the treatment of disease. Q: Can you tell us a little about the background of the providers and your staff at the Surprise location?

A: We have three providers currently at the Surprise Location. Dr. James Evans supervises the location and is available for consults as needed. Dr Patricia Beck is a naturopathic doctor with a background in Physical Therapy as well. We are looking forward to having her with us as she is already in high demand for her naturopathic skills. The advantage of having her here is that you can be seen by a Naturopath but will be billed through your insurance. It is the best of both worlds. She is will be at the clinic on Fridays and Saturdays starting in November. I am Erica Eaton and I am a Physician Assistant. I have been in Family Practice for the over two years but have also worked in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Long Term Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities. I am at the clinic Monday through Thursday. We currently have two Medical Assistants, Patssy and Venis, who are the actual ones that keep this office running.

Q: How would you describe your approach to patients?

A: My approach to patients is pretty laid back. I know a lot of people do not like going to the doctor so I want to make sure that people feel comfortable when they are in our office. If they are able to feel comfortable, then I can take better care of the patient. I am also a big proponent of the patient being a participant in their health care decisions, so any plan that is formulated involves patient input as well.

Q: Do you offer services targeted at Women's health in Surprise?

A: We do have full services for Women including Well Woman Exams, as well as addressing any female issues including paps, breast and pelvic exams, hormone testing and hormone replacement.

Q: Do you offer services targeted to men's health in Surprise?

A: We also offer services for Men including annual physicals, as well as addressing any male issues including hormone testing and hormone replacement.

Q: Tell us more about the Surprise location of Phoenix Family Medical Clinic. How are you different from other clinics in the area?

A: We are a full service Family Medicine practice that accepts a wide range of insurances as well as offers a discount program for people who do not have any insurance. The discount program includes discounted office visits as well as discounted labs and imaging. We are currently accepting new patients by appointment or walk-in. We also offer bilingual services. We do all our blood draws in office for the convenience of our patients.

Q: Does the Surprise clinic offer services to Internal Medicine patients?

A: We are able to take care of Internal Medicine patients also due to the background of our supervising physician and other providers. Dr. James Evans, MD is a Board Certified Physician in Internal Medicine.

Q: Does the Surprise clinic see kids? Do you participate in the Vaccines for Children program?

A: We are able to see kids at this location. That is one of my favorite parts of the day when I get to see a kid, especially if they are scared of coming to the doctor. It is a chance to help them see that it can be not necessarily fun but at least not frightening. We do participate in the Vaccines for Children program too so we are able to keep children up to date on their vaccinations.

Q: What does the Phoenix Family Medical Clinic, Surprise location have in store for the future?

A: We are looking forward to growing and filling a need in this community for health care for all ages. We are planning on being here for the long haul and become a place where we treat the whole family. We are planning to offer Allergy Treatment in our office soon. Q: What makes your association with the Laveen clinic unique?

A: I have spent over 14 years as a Registered Nurse in various positions and departments at large and small hospitals treating patients first hand. I have been in emergency room situations where I have been with patients in critical conditions needing life support and immediate surgeries. I have worked in Home care settings where I was in the patient's familiar surroundings and helped them with regular treatments to help them heal to continue their daily activities. I bring vast breadth of experience to the clinic that helps me understand the patients needs better and devise a wellness plan that is not cookie cutter and keeps the unique patient's need in mind. I am long time resident of Laveen that gives me a rare perspective of the medical and health needs of patients in our community. My kids grew up here in Laveen and I love our community here.

Q: How are you equipped to treat ailments of the 21st century?

A: My approach to health starts from listening to the patient thoroughly and understanding the root cause of his/her issue before looking into tests that need to be run or discussions about medicine and other treatment options. I discuss the options and the planned next steps with the patients before proceeding, getting buy in from the patient is extremely important for success of any wellness plan. The days of dictating treatments to patients are gone, personal wellness if a dialog between healthcare providers and patients.

Q: Accessibility to primary care is an issue, appointments are generally not available for days, and how do you plan to address that in Laveen?

A: The Phoenix Family Medical Clinic in Laveen accepts same day appointments and also Walk-Ins. We will accommodate urgent needs of the patients with immediate attention given to all critical patients. We understand that patients need to see their provider when they are sick and not after 5 days by which time things can get worse. We all lead busy lives and not being able to perform tasks is not an option for most of us. Our philosophy is to be there for the patients when they need us.

Q: Do you offer Preventive Examinations at the clinic?

A: Yes, we offer and encourage Women taking advantage of our Well Women Exams including Paps, breast and pelvic exams that are included in most insurance plans as part of their preventive care. We can let you know if your particular plan has these offered or not. Yearly physicals for men and children are also offered. The age specific Well Child Exams are offered at our clinic that help see issues before they manifest.

Q: Will you offer Blood test and Draw services at the clinic?

A: Yes, we will have phlebotomists staff at the clinic to conveniently perform blood draw and other services to the patients. This helps you save time and is convenient for us to access your lab results efficiently. We will also offer EKG, pulmonary testing, minor procedures like cyst and wart removal, toenail removal, wound care and breathing treatments to name a few services at the clinic.

Q: Tell us more about the services you are planning to offer in the near future?

A: We are excited to let the community know that we will be offering Ultrasound services pretty soon at the Laveen clinic. We are also working on bringing an effective Allergy testing and treatment program.
