What to Do When You Have a Halloween Emergency

Halloween is just around the corner and while you prepare your costumes, we advise you to exercise some caution. Trick or treaters get carried away every year and Emergency Rooms get crowded with victims of Halloween stunts gone awry. Plan your revelry and put up those Jack-o-lanterns as you will, but don’t forget to keep a check on you and your family’s safety. Nobody wants to have to visit a hospital abruptly ending a celebration. So how do you keep safe this Halloween? Here are a few tips on that end.

  • Make sure your costume doesn’t impede your vision – When you’re out on the street, you need to be able to see your way. Choose a costume with adequate visibility. You could use makeup on your face instead of wearing a mask.
  • Pick a costume that is flame resistant – Like it or not, Halloween decorations at most places will include candles and lanterns. You need to keep fire-safe and a flame resistant costume will help achieve this.
  • Carry a flashlight – You don’t want to stumble over things and cause yourself an injury, always carry a flashlight in your bag when you go trick or treating outdoors.
  • Don’t walk on the street – The sidewalks are there for a reason and drivers may not be able to spot your dark costumes at night in areas with scarce lighting.
  • Reserve judgment when visiting other’s homes for trick or treating – Only visit houses which have their porch lights on. You don’t want to stumble into an antisocial’s house.
  • Don’t eat homemade treats unless they come from a trusted source – We are not saying that your neighbor might try to poison you, but there are pretty good chances that your neighbor will not be aware of any food allergies that might endanger your health.
  • Try not to travel alone – Halloween offers an opportunity for miscreants on the streets to engage in crimes without having their identity out in the open. You never know who is lurking behind that Zorro mask. If possible, travel in groups when you are outside, especially if the area is unknown to you.

Now, that we’ve made you aware of tips and suggestions that will help keep your Halloween safe, let’s discuss what you can do in case of a Halloween emergency.

You must always be prepared for emergency situations during Halloween. Keep a first-aid kit handy for treating any cuts, burns or injuries that you or a family member can sustain.
