How Can Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Affect Your Day To Day Life?

Have you been feeling tired very often for no particular reason? Is your day-to-day life affected due to this tiredness? If so, it is time you consult your healthcare provider. Remember that chronic fatigue is not something to be neglected.

What is chronic fatigue syndrome and what are its symptoms?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest. It is an intricate condition that cannot be explained by any underlying medical ailment. CFS is also referred to as SEID, which stands for systemic exertion intolerance disease, or ME (short for myalgic encephalomyelitis).

CFS impacts a wide range of systems and functions of the body, and hence many of the symptoms appear similar to other health conditions. The core symptoms of CFS are as follows.

  • Fatigue or extreme lack of energy that reduces the ability to perform day to day activities
  • Post-exertional malaise (PEM) is a deterioration of symptoms after physical or mental exertion that results in intense exhaustion during recovery.
  • Sleep disorder or unrefreshing sleep even after a long night of rest
  • Cognitive impairment refers to difficulty in though processing or loss of memory or concentration
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting while moving from lying on the back to sitting or standing.
  • Sensitivity to certain foods, alcohol, sound, and light
  • Severe, frequent headaches and a sore throat
  • Other symptoms include pain and discomfort, depression, anxiety attack, rashes, twitching muscles, among others.

What causes CFS is unknown, though experts believe that it may be triggered from combinations of factors such as viral infections to psychological stress. Also, there is no single test that will diagnose CFS. A series of tests are conducted based on the factors to rule out other possible health problems with similar symptoms.

How does CFS affect your day to day life?

CFS is an unyielding demon from which there is no refuge. But it is not that difficult to live with it. As a CFS patient,

  • You may be disrupted from many of the events you are interested in, such as watching a movie or reading a book. But there are times when the symptoms ease.
  • You might be a sports lover, but CFS kicks off PEM, which can put you in all kinds of trouble. You may also acquire injuries based on how much you exerted yourself.
  • Loss of sleep as a result of CFS can cause a lot of other health problems, starting with severe headaches, weakness, and dizziness among others
  • CFS relapse is nothing like the rerun of your favourite movie. It can stress you out to a level that you would rather enjoy a cup of tea with the person you hate the most than experience the stress and fatigue of CFS relapse. When you have the time and opportunity to take care of yourself, don’t waste it on unnecessary chores.
