Preventive Medical Examination

Our health is the greatest asset we have. It is essential to secure our health to live a long and fulfilling life. Checking up on our health from time to time alerts us to any health risk that we may be inclined to and manage our body accordingly. It informs us of lifestyle changes that we might need to make to live a healthier disease-free life. Preventive medical examination or PME is a preventive health check-up that individuals undergo when they take a proactive approach to safeguarding their health. It takes place when you choose to walk into a medical clinic without any known pre-existing medical condition simply to have yourself screened for the risk of developing any.

A PME evaluates the current status of your health and physical capabilities. It makes you aware of any potential health problems which you can expect later in life. The idea is to detect, mitigate and try to eliminate any medical complications that may arise to endanger your health in the future. There’s nothing quite like having a PME performed if you’re worried about your health and want clinical reassurance of your health and wellbeing.

PME's can be performed to have a host of health risks assessed, some of which are – cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and gastrointestinal disease. If you happen to find that you have the symptoms of a yet undetected medical condition – treatment for the same can be commenced early after the condition has been discovered in the process of your PME. Early discovery of disease is of utmost importance in countering the harmful effects that it may manifest.

What does a PME generally consist of?

A physician adopts a multi-pronged approach in examining your current health in a PME.

· He/she may ask about your medical history and find out if any disease runs hereditary in your family. They will ask about health lapses that you have suffered early in your life, whether you have undergone any surgery or related medical procedure and about all the injuries you've experienced so far.

· They will want to know of all the vaccinations you’ve been administered and the ones which you haven’t been subject to.

· Measurement of blood pressure and pulse is a mandatory step taken in a PME.

· A holistic physical examination will be conducted next which will include eyesight examination, neurological health examination, a basic oncological examination and a state of health examination.

· An ECG will be conducted to assess heart health.

· Blood and urine examination will be made to rule out anomalies in kidney/urinary function as well as other health conditions.

  • BMI will be counted.

· Stool will be examined for any trace of internal bleeding to ensure the individual doesn't have intestinal cancer.

Conclusion

The tests mentioned above are only the most primary health check-ups conducted as part of PME. Other health examinations may take place if the physician deems so necessary. Preventive Medical Examinations are a great way to keep abreast with the condition of your health and make lifestyle changes, if required, to reduce the incidence of illness and disease.
