Protect Yourself From Air Pollution

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicted air pollution as the numero uno health risk on a global scale. The individual, on a granular level, is responsible for own protection against the harmful particulate matter. A little research on local pollution is sufficient to make yourself a healthy person. Your body can quickly repair itself and you can be fit and enjoy a better quality of life. It is to be noted that air pollution may vary in different locations within the same region.

Pay attention to daily broadcasts

Listen to the air pollution reports broadcast in your city. If you have a smartphone, chances are there is an app to inform you about the present air quality. Download the app if you have not already done so. Do not forget to check pollution reports in your office location as well. Significant differences in pollution levels are more than possible in different areas of the city. Since most of us spend a substantial time of the day commuting, the pollution present during the commute plays a major part in making us sick.

It follows that exercise should not be done in areas which witness high vehicular traffic. This holds true even for rural, seemingly pure air areas. Highways are the source of maximum pollution. Fewer cars drive through side streets and thus they generate less pollution.

Do not exercise outdoors if the pollution exceeds the permissible limit. Venturing out is a strict negative. Walk indoors for your daily exercise. A treadmill makes an excellent device to meet your daily calorie burning quota. Restrict the quantity of time your children spend outdoors playing. In short, unhealthy air quality is harmful to everyone.

Minimal energy consumption

Your home must have a healthy environment. Use minimal energy to run your house. Reduction of energy use means improvement in air quality and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Since a significant source of air pollution is electricity generation, It makes good sense to get off the grid. Energy independence will save you money. Do request your local school to adopt greener practices. Good environmental practices could be practiced in the school bus. The bus driver can switch off the engine when stuck at an intersection.

Ditch your car. Use public transport systems like commuter trains or buses to avoid taking the car. Walk to your office if possible or take a carpool. Combining trips is an excellent idea. If you live in a semi-rural environment, do not burn firewood. Trash should not be burned for disposal. These two are major sources of pollution in rural and semi-rural areas.

Try to use only hand-powered or electrical machines. Avoid gasoline-powered equipment. Do not use machines powered by two-stroke engines as the latter is a major contributor to road pollution. These engines are made at a time when pollution control was less of a worry. Buy equipment manufactured in 2011 or later. Do not allow any person to smoke tobacco any other smoke-generating inhaler indoors. Support measures to make all the public spaces free of tobacco. Get involved in environmental activities.
