Are You Properly Hydrated?

Monsoon season in Arizona brings with it relatively cooler temperatures, overcast afternoons and balmy breezes, and many families use this time to partake in outdoor activities, such as hiking, playing sports and enjoying the swimming pool. But even though the weather is not as mercilessly hot as usual, it is still very important to take steps to prevent dehydration. At Phoenix Family Medical Clinic, we believe there is no reason for anyone to suffer from dehydration so long as proper precautions are taken. Please take the time to review these key tips to staying hydrated and combating the signs of dehydration this season.

Drink plenty of fluids – plan ahead and always carry water with you, especially if you will be outside for long periods of time.

Avoid over-exerting yourself outside during the hottest parts of the day. Plan outside activities for early mornings or evenings.

Watch out for elderly people and children, as dehydration can overtake them more easily than it can a healthy adult.

Avoid alcohol and sugary drink consumption – these beverages cause water loss and alcohol could impair your ability to react to the warning signs of dehydration.

Wear light colored loose-fitting clothing and use water to keep your skin cool if you have to be outside for long periods of time.

Take frequent breaks for water and shade. This is important especially if you work outside. Try to replace the water lost through perspiration at the same rate it is lost.

Be aware of the symptoms of dehydration. These include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Dry mouth and swollen tongue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations (feeling that the heart is jumping or pounding)
  • Confusion
  • Sluggishness fainting
  • Fainting
  • Inability to sweat
  • Decreased urine output

Unfortunately, in the brutal heat of summer, dehydration does occur, and if severe enough may call for medical attention. Call Phoenix Family Medical Clinic if the dehydrated person experiences any of the following:

  • Increased or constant vomiting for more than a day
  • Fever over 101°F
  • Diarrhea for more than 2 days
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased urine production
  • Confusion
  • Weakness

Contact emergency medical services immediately if there are any signs of:

  • Fever higher than 103°F
  • Confusion
  • Sluggishness (lethargy)
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or abdominal pains
  • Fainting
  • No urine in the last 12 hours
