Causes of Back Pain on Period

There are many women who suffer from back pain during their periods. While for some it can be a mild pain, for others the pain can be severe.

If you are one of these women and suffer from the same condition, have you ever pondered why such a pain occurs immediately before the menstrual cycle or while the period is going on?

Do you experience such pain even after your period gets over?

When a woman or a girl is having her menstrual cycle, back pain or cramp in the abdomen can be experienced; such a condition is known as Dysmenorrhea in medical terms.

This condition of abdominal cramping and/or back pain is medically termed Dysmenorrhea. This ailment causes lower or upper back pain when a woman is having her period.

Though, such a pain can be severe, it is not to be worried about too much and goes away just some days after occurring.  But although it is not a serious issue, the condition can be quite painful and women who suffer from such a back pain usually look for cure or a treatment.

Causes of back pain during menstruation cycle

Endometriosis

A key cause of back pain that can be linked to the menstrual cycle of a woman is known as endometriosis. It is not a normal reproductive condition as the cells start growing at a fast rate just outside a uterus causing tremendous back and abdominal pain. Typically, pain due to Endometriosis starts occurring a few days ahead of the female patient's monthly cycle.

When a woman ails from this condition, there is an increase in the back pain every year as she starts aging or does not treat this condition. A time comes when the pain is so severe that the affected woman is not even able to do her routine work and has difficulty in coming out of her bed. If the endometriosis becomes so bad, then the only full-proof solution is hysterectomy.

Dysmenorrhea

This condition is a major cause for the occurrence of back pain while a woman is having her menstrual cycle. Dysmenorrhea often presents with sharp contraction in the uterus, cramping can occur in back, upper thighs or in abdomen. Some of the causes of dysmenorrhea can be anxiety, lack of proper exercise and stress. Possibility of experiencing a back pain is also there if you are consuming pills for birth control for preventing ovulation. Such a back pain is slow to start but can shift to other parts of your back.
