Tips for Arthritis Pain Relief in Winter Season

Many people who suffer from arthritis or knee or joint pain often complain that their pain aggravate during the cold or rainy weather. Though, the correlation between joint pain and weather is yet to be proved scientifically, you can try out these simple tips for arthritis pain relief when you feel that your joint pain has become intolerable in winter.

Cover yourself up with warm clothes

When the weather is cold or freezing outside, you must keep your hands warm by wearing gloves. You can also include additional layers over your legs and knees. If you are fond of wearing skirts and dresses in winter, make sure that you are wearing leggings or tights for staying warm.

Use extra layers for covering yourself

When you live in a cold weather and are suffering from arthritis pain, it is crucial to wear plenty of layers so that you can control your comfort level when there is a dramatic shift in the temperature during day time.

Losing weight may help

If you are obese, it may add to the problem that you already face due to pain in your joint. Your pain can be in control even in winters if you lose those extra pounds by being active physically. You will observe that as your physical activity increases, your weight loss will lead to improvement in knee arthritis.

Even in winters, it is important that you hydrate your body well

You may live in a cold region but that is also characterized by dry climate. It is essential that you start drinking as much water as possible so that your body is adequately hydrated. This will also help you to remain active. If your body is even mildly dehydrated, your sensitivity to pain will increase.

Follow a regular exercise regimen but it should be done indoors

It is quite okay if you want to stay away from winter chill. However, it is also crucial that people who are suffering from joint pains should be physically active. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, especially in the winters, your physical condition may deteriorate. To avoid catching cold outdoors, make a proper plan for exercising indoors. For instance, you can have an elliptical trainer and a treadmill at home. Try to walk as much as possible.

Warm water can be very comfortable for you

If you can swim in a heated swimming pool, it is an excellent exercise and can also have a soothing feel to your joints. When you take warm baths you may get relief from your arthritis pain. However, it is important to note that you should not be exposed to a cold weather immediately after coming out from a warm bath. You must let your body temperature become normal first.

Use Vitamin D as a supplement

If there is low level of Vitamin D in your body, it will make you more sensitive to pain due to arthritis. Deficiency of Vitamin D also increases the vulnerability to osteoporosis. It is less likely that you will be able to get the required level of vitamin D from the natural sources such as sunlight. So it makes sense to consult your physician for vitamin D supplements.
