Symptoms, Treatment and Management of Cholesterol

Every healthy person should measure their cholesterol level every couple of years to ensure that every part of the body is in good health. Both men and women aged beyond 35 years should be frequently screened for lipid problems. Lipid test can check for existence of both good and bad cholesterol that are stored in different cells of the body. People with high cholesterol face risk of heart disease that can be cured with low fat diet and exercise. Though there are no common symptoms of cholesterol as it is the cause of heart disease it can lead to serious complications that can affect rest of the body.

Accessing body cholesterol levels

Doctors conduct blood test that is referred to as lipoprotein profile to evaluate existence of HDL, LDL and triglycerides in the body. Besides this blood test a complete physical exam is carried out on the individual to check rate of heart beat and blood pressure to check if body mass index is per mandated norms for a healthy person of that age and sex.

LDL cholesterol

This is bad cholesterol that gets accumulated in artery walls and increase chances of heart disease. If LDL levels are at 190 or more it is considered dangerously high and doctor will advice medication to reduce cholesterol level and live a healthier life. Depending on an individual’s cholesterol risk for ten years doctors will advise diet and exercise to reduce this and improve HDL or good cholesterol which will protect body from heart disease.

Managing diet and health

Include a healthy mix of nuts, grains and proteins in your diet along with plenty of water for detoxification of your body. Egg whites without the yellow fat, lean meat cuts and fishes like tuna, salmon and sardines can help provide energy and strength to keep your body healthy without saturated and unsaturated fats. Regular exercise and brisk walking can protect you from diabetes and high blood pressure along with reducing triglyceride levels and raising good cholesterol levels.

Borderline cholesterol

If an individual is a high cholesterol borderline patient then his/her levels of cholesterol will be between 200 and 239. In this situation the doctor may carry out more detailed tests to determine quantity of good and bad cholesterol so that practices can be undertaken to reduce the latter and increase the former.

Treatment and care for managing cholesterol

Though doctors treating patients with high cholesterol focus is on reducing level of bad cholesterol in the body they also advice patients to refrain from unhealthy habits like smoking and alcohol. Healthy eating habits and and cooking mediums go a long way in reducing quantity of saturated and trans fats along with risk of heart disease. Food items rich in fiber and protein but low in sugar and salts can help in reducing and controlling cholesterol.
