Major Triggers of Disability Due To Back Pain

Around 10 percent of the entire population in the world suffers from back pain. According to Arthritis Research United Kingdom, 4 out of every 5 people get affected by back pain at some point or the other in their lives. Thus, it is regarded as a top contributor of invalidity all over the world. However, what are those key triggers and what are the ways to avoid them?

A person can feel the pain at any place along with his or her spine. But the pain in one’s lower back is extremely common. The discomfort in the back is not the outcome of anything serious for many. In most cases, such a discomfort may pass after some weeks it a few months.

But for many other people, this pain can persist beyond that period and affect their living quality. For instance, the pain can prevent them from sleeping well at nights or refrain them from exercising. In extremely rare situations, such pain can also be a symptom of cancer, infection or a broken spine.

NHS feels that in most cases, back pain is not specific. It means there so no clear cut cause or even mechanical, which means the origin of the pain lies in the soft tissue, bone or joints around the affected person's spine. Such a back pain may be an outcome of wrong body posture or can be linked to feeling tensed or stressed up. But there are specific medical conditions, which may lead to back pain. Some prominent ones are as follows:

Arthritis

The condition is also referred to as spinal arthritis and it has a tendency to affect one's lower back portion of the body. The origin of this kind of back pain is the disintegration of the cartilage present in one's discs and joints of lower back and neck region. Arthritis is mainly caused due to obesity and wear and tear. But poor postures and repetitive activities can increase the risk. Along with a back pain, pain and weakness in the legs are quite common in this condition.

Slipped disc

It is a condition where a disc in the affected person's cartilage present in the spine has got damaged. The damaged disc is now pressing on the surrounding nerves causing pain. Slipped disc could be an outcome of picking up heavy objects, being overweight or awkward bending. Apart from back pain, others signs are a weakness in different parts of one's body, tingling, and numbness.

Sciatica

It is a condition caused due to irritation experienced in a nerve that is spread all the way from lower back to the affected person's feet. Mostly, this condition is caused due to a slipped disc. But the condition can be also triggered due to an injury in the spinal cord or a tumor in the spine. Key symptoms of Sciatica include weaknesses in one's feet, legs, buttocks and lower back, and tingling, numbness and pain.

Today, most people work sitting in the same and spend a lot of time sitting at home. Such an inactive life style can make one's key muscle groups weaker. The function of these muscle groups is to support the spine. Eventually, such a lifestyle will cause discomfort in your lower back and result in severe injuries if not taken care of.

If your back in is not the outcome of any major trauma, a majority of the back pains can be controlled through exercise and go resistance training to challenge proper muscle groups as a preventive measure against the back pain in the future.

But despite that, if you still feel that your back pain is too much to bear, you can visit Phoenix Family Medical Clinic and consult a physician at the earliest.
