Two Symptoms of Back Pain That Need Medical Attention Immediately

When you are suffering from a back pain, which may be due to some kind of reversible problems, your ache may subside within done hours or days despite the severity. But when you find that your back pain is persisting and is bringing certain other crucial changes, the situation could be riskier if left untreated for a long time.

You can have a back pain due to several reasons that are mostly related to issues in the front part of your body like the lungs or even the abdomen. If a person experiences mild back pain over his or her lifetime, it can be managed successfully through easy back pain treatments such as losing weight, exercise, massage, medication, proper rest as advised by a physician and application of the salves among others.

Typically, if you are suffering from a lower back pain, you need not feel alarmed. However, when you experience the two symptoms mentioned below, related to the lower back pain, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Progressive leg weakness

When the lower extremities of your body namely feet and leg experience progressive weakness, it can be a symptom of a condition called cauda equina syndrome. When you suffer from this condition, you can also experience weakness in your buttocks, genital areas, and hips. When your spine has an injury, it may cause the cauda equina syndrome. It may be also the result of an infection that leads to serious compression of an entire nerve sac located in one's lumbar spine or due to a spinal condition.

The syndrome has derived its name from a Latin word meaning "horse's tail". This is so since the nerves located towards the end of an affected person's spine resembles that of a horse's tail. If you are suffering from this condition, you need immediate surgical attention for eliminating, decompression or reducing the pressure on those affected nerves of yours. If you do not treat this syndrome for a long time, you may suffer from severe conditions like experiencing loss of bowel or bladder control, lack of sensation below the lumbar spine or even paralysis.

Severe back pain coupled with abdominal pain

Are you experiencing a sudden shot of pain in your lower back, which is not related to a past injury or any other cause? If that is the case, you could be ailing from a condition known as the abdominal aortic aneurysm. Your body's main artery is known as the aorta. This artery extends from a human heart till it reaches his or her abdomen. Typically, when the abdominal aortic aneurysm leads to massive back pain along with pain in the abdomen, it is regarded as a life-threatening condition and can even hint a rupture. Some other indicators that can be also life-threatening are symptoms like low blood pressure and shock. In case this condition is detected only when it reaches an emergency point, the affected person needs to immediately undergo a surgery so that the ruptured artery can be repaired.

Though only two syndromes have been discussed here there can be other severe symptoms such as bladder or novel incontinence and unknown fever. These conditions may also need immediate attention of the doctors. To conclude, it can be safely said that it always makes sense to be cautious while addressing symptoms of severe back pain. So, whenever you are in doubt, it is better to seek medical attention.
