New Year Resolutions for Relief from Chronic Back Pain

Are you one of those innumerable people suffering from chronic back pain? If yes, New Year is the ideal time for making some changes in your lifestyle so that your back pain can be controlled.

Check out these tips and add a few of them on your resolution list.

Remove electronic gadgets out of your bedroom

Some studies have concluded that about 66 percent of people suffering from chronic back pain have sleep disorders. One of the major contributors of poor sleep for several people is the use of electronic gadgets/items like TV, laptop, tablet and smartphone in the bedroom. After all, it is not very difficult to be distracted when you should be in your bed, sleeping. Make sure all these distracting devices are in some other room, especially at night. Good habits for sleep hygiene include controlling the time of going to bed and waking up in the mornings, taking a bath in hot water before going to bed at night and regulating your room temperature.

You should stand after every hour

Your back health can be improved by sitting less. A study has found out that less sitting can reduce neck and back pain and also improve your mood.

You can use a standing desk or a laptop stand instead of using a conventional desk. Your lower spine's discs can get compressed up to three times while you sit and work. Thus, standing while at work may be helpful in relieving the pressure on your spine.

It is recommended to wake up every hour if possible, even if that means getting yourself a glass of water. This is a habit which will also help in keeping the blood flowing into your back muscles more active.

As soon as you get inside your home, do not head towards a recliner or a couch. Go for a brief walk prior to settling down for the evening. Even while watching the television, try to get up more frequently.

Make it a habit of walking for three to four times every week

There are several merits of exercises. Aerobic exercises with low impact, when done regularly, may lower the inflammation, improve healing to send blood rich in oxygen to your painful areas and make your muscles stronger. Some advice for walking include

  • Get a proper pair of shoes for walking. You may visit a specialty shop in your locality to do so.
  • Include walking as a part of your regular schedule to make it a daily habit.
  • If you have balance issues or weakness in your legs so that it is a bit difficult to walk, you can try using trekking poles or a cane.
  • Set a date for quitting the usage of tobacco.
  • Research shows that those who smoke suffer from more pain as compared to the non-smokers. While it can be a challenging task to quit smoking, you will derive various benefits after doing do. Do not delay the process of quitting. Fix a date and then stick to your resolution.
