Important Things to Know About Back Pain

The degree or the frequency of back pain may vary from individual to individual. While some people may feel mild back pain, others may find it too severe to do their routine work while the pain persists. There are various reasons why you may be vulnerable to back pain. Some such causes are mentioned below:

Back pain due to injuries

Often a person ails from injuries or back related problems due to some heavy home projects, doing jobs that may hurt your back or while indulging in sports or athletics.

Physically unfit

If you are physically not fit, you may be vulnerable to back pain. They are less prevalent in people who are physically fit and are in proper shape.

Osteoarthritis

This is the most common form of arthritis that can affect your spine and cause back pain and other back related problems.

Due to aging

As people grow older, back pain can become a more common phenomenon. So, it makes sense to be careful with your fitness, sitting postures when you start crossing the age of 30.

Obesity

Obese or overweight people are more prone to suffer from back pain. Try to avoid diet with high calories and opt for food that is rich in protein and fiber. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. When your body weight becomes more than normal, it puts pressure on your back leading to back pain.

Hereditary reasons

There are some back pains that occur in people due to hereditary reasons. Such pains can affect spines but are passed through generations.

Smoker’s cough

Frequent coughing may put pressure on your back resulting in severe back pain. So, quit smoking when you see the first tell-tale signs of back pain when you cough too much.

Taking care to prevent your back pain

Though hundred percent prevention of back pain may not be possible, there are still ways to keep the pain in check if you are careful about it and adhere to some simple techniques.

Some of the most important ones are as follows:

Follow a healthy and scientific lifestyle-When you eat properly and live a healthy life, the possibility of back pain will reduce to a great extent.

Check your weight-as discussed above, excess body weight or obesity might lead to back pain. You should exercise regularly and eat the right kind of food to keep your weight in check.

Quit smoking-Smoking can hurt your back due to bouts of smoker’s cough as discussed earlier. So stop smoking as soon as possible. Moreover, when you smoke too much, your spine can age prematurely.

Practice proper posture- This is one of the most crucial ways for reducing or preventing your back pain. Do you have to work for long hours standing in the same posture? If that is the case, your footwear is quite important. Opt for flat shoes in such a scenario.

While back pain is an extremely common phenomenon, and about 80 percent of people ail from it at some time or the other, proper care and timely consultation with your physician can go a long way to alleviate it.
