Four Myths Related to Back Pain

Many misconceptions exist with respect to back pain. There have been constant updates related to the reasons of back pain and how they can be cured. One just does not know which remedy to trust and what not to. It is important that all these misconceptions that exist be sorted out so that one is realistic about such a pain and its effective management. Here are a number of common myths about back pain and how to cure it.

Myth #1: You should be very careful so that your back is always protected from avoiding further pain

In reality, most people who suffer from back pain tend to be over cautious about their backs. This often leads to greater pain and injury as there is inadequate conditioning. In order to keep your spine healthy, it should be subjected to a regular routine of strengthening, aerobic conditioning and strengthening conditioning exercises. If you do not exercise well and lead a sedentary lifestyle, there will be a lack of flexibility and strength and that can lead to more harm rather than good. If your physician does not advise you otherwise, you should protect your back by including correct body posture and mechanics. You can also resort to guided physical therapy sessions to make sure that the exercises that you do are correct.

Myth #2: Back pain is an incurable problem

It is an absolutely false notion and if you are suffering from chronic neck or back pain, you must get it treated. You must note whether such a pain is disrupting your ability to go about your regular activities. If it is doing so, it is recommended that you seek expert’s help immediately so that your back pain does not become worse. Some experts even say that if your pain remains untreated for a long time, they may get worse with time. This in turn could affect your body’s flexibility and lead to undesirable outcomes.

Myth 3: Your back pain can deteriorate with age

There is this common misconception with many young folks that if their pain is bad when they are in their 30s or 40s, the pain can further deteriorate when they will be in their 60s and they may even have to resort to wheelchairs. In reality though, young people are more prone to suffering from back pains. So if patients can find an effective solution for their pain management, their back pain may subside with time.

Myth 4: If your back pain remains untreated, it may result in paralysis

Since your spinal cord starts where the base of your brain ends, a majority of back bone related problems are benign. Your spinal cord is not connected to your lower back or the lumbar spine. As the lumbar spine is not connected to the spinal cord and offers huge space for accommodating the nerve roots, there is hardly any possibility of suffering from paralysis even if you suffer from a severe condition like a big disc herniation.
