Tips For Parents of Children Suffering From Back Pain

When your children complain of frequent back pains, do not neglect them as they can develop into chronic pains when they grow up. There may be various reasons why your kids are going through back pain at times. Some of them include inadequate physical activity, bulky school bags and improper postures. Since these are some of the key contributors of back pain, it is crucial for you as a parent to realize the ways of preventing your child from developing a back pain.

About 80 percent of the people suffer from back pain at some stage in their lives so your kids need to be sensitized about the importance of correct postures so that their spines are in good condition. It always pays to inculcate healthy habits right from their childhood. One of the ways to prevent back or spine pain in your kids would be by ensuring that they lead a healthy lifestyle. Your kid can be healthy when he or she has a proper sleep, eats a balanced diet, and indulges in proper physical activities and exercises.

Maintaining a proper posture

Though this is one of the most basic things for avoiding back pain in kids, most of the kids are not in the habit of following it. You should teach your kids to adopt a correct posture while standing or sitting. For instance, if you child stands with a straight back, chest out and chin up, it is regarded as a good posture. While sitting in the class room, your kid must ensure that his feet is firmly on the floor and back is straight. Sitting in a wrong posture may put more pressure on the spine thus resulting in back pain. Kids love playing games on a mobile or a tablet. While doing so, they cause severe stress on their spine. Make sure that your kid is raising the phone to his eye level so that the pressure is less on the back.

Staying active

Proper physical activity will help your child in maintaining a proper weight so that there is less pressure on his spine. Moreover, when your child is active, the muscles become stronger and that is essential to support the spine. Your child has to sit for long hours in his classroom and that can also cause back pain. Teach your child to practice some easy stretching exercises in between the classes. Such short breaks will relax the tired muscles and will put less stress on the back.

Choose a proper backpack

As discussed earlier, a bulky backpack may often lead to back pains, so make sure that you are selecting the right backpack for your child. If your child carries a backpack that has a single strap, the entire pressure falls on one shoulder as the weight cannot get equally distributed on both his shoulders. Just make sure that you select a backpack that is not made of leather and is lightweight. Go for a backpack that is preferably made of canvas. Moreover, if you purchase a backpack that features a waist belt, the weight gets distributed in a balanced manner. Apart from that, make sure that your kid carries only those items that are required for the day. Your child’s backpack should be cleaned at regular intervals so that he does not carry extra weight.
