Postpartum Depression

The birth of a child can trigger a variety of overwhelming emotions in the mother. It could be extreme happiness, anxiety or even depression. Postpartum or post-natal depression (PPD) is one that affects new mothers.

Most of the times, the mood swings and crying spells experienced by the mother, fade quickly. If not, they can experience serious and severe symptoms.

What are its causes?

There are no substantial studies to show the causes of PPD and neither are they well understood. It might be due to lifestyle changes, hormonal changes or even genetics.

As they grow up, children might experience behavioral problems like temper issues, sleeplessness, hyperactivity and aggression.   • Join a support group where you can share your feeling with mothers who are experiencing the same problem.

  • Do not try to be perfect. A mother's world changes after giving birth and it is normal to not know everything. Do not get anxious or feel guilty. Ask your loved ones for help.
