Five Easy Ways to Keep your ADHD Child Focused on Projects

Managing children with ADHD can become stressful for a parent if he/she does not know how to direct the child’s energy towards fruitful activity. Making an ADHD child focus on homework or work at home can be challenging for parents and siblings as they tend to get distracted by everything around them. To get children with ADHD to focus and concentrate on matters at hand, you will need to dissect tasks into time slots and lay down strict regulations about completing one before going on to the next one. This will instill a semblance of responsibility within them so they can manage their tasks better and live a disciplined life as they grow older.

Build a support group

The first step forward would be to have a solid support group of friends, relatives, siblings, teachers and everyone that the child deals with on a daily basis. These people act like cheerleaders for your child who can help and encourage your child concentrate on small tasks and then move on to the heavy tasks. You can mail or text them about your child’s scheduled tasks for the day and they can follow up with you on the progress.

Relaxation and integration techniques

The single largest problem of ADHD children is their inability to focus and relax completely. Have a daily session of relaxation and meditation exercises to help their brain relax and integrate with their body movements. Get your child to sit down calmly in a place without any disturbance and keep positive visual images for him to relax and concentrate. Do not force this exercise at a scheduled time every day or your child can begin to hate it, but get him to meditate when he is free of schoolwork and playtime.

Play concentration games

Memory games like Simon, chess, and golf are ideal for helping your child improve memory and concentration. Get your child to play these games on a daily basis with friends or with you so that his brain circuits are challenged and connections are strong and powerful. If you have a smartphone, download games like Memory and Mosquito Killer which helps memorize sequences of visual stimuli.

Build visual reminders of goals

If you do not want to feel guilty about constantly reminding your child to complete his daily tasks and chores, put up visual reminders about them. Doing so, will help him develop a schedule to finish them on a regular basis. If he successfully completes his tasks, you can reward him in the end. Have him carry visual images of rewards that he received on his success to motivate him and soon he will get into the habit of completing tasks on schedule.

Let homework be fun

You have to abandon the traditional way of doing things when you have an ADHD child so learn to mix subjects while doing homework. Take breaks every half hour or to make sure that your child will be able to sit down and concentrate properly on the task at hand. Such breaks will also boost his mental energy and capacity.

It is possible to get your ADHD child to focus with a mix of patience and creativity so the child begins every project with enthusiasm and completes it on time.
